Why you should go to Wrocław

Located on the banks of the River Oder, Wrocław is a beautiful city comprising 12 islands and 130 bridges. There has been a settlement at this location since the 6th Century, but now Wrocław is the largest city in western Poland and was awarded both European Capital of Culture and World Book Capital in 2016.

For those who love culture and history, there is so much to discover. You can enjoy the National Museum’s collections of fine art, or visit the Multimedia Fountain by modernist Centennial Hall to watch a stunning display of light, sound and water in the evening.

One of the most unique parts of Wrocław is its collection of over 400 Gnomes, which are scattered throughout the city in a variety of situations. Pick up a map at the tourist office and see if you can spot the fireman gnomes, the bricklayer gnome or the couch potato, and enjoy this Wrocław tradition.

When you should go to Wrocław

The best time of year to visit Wrocław depends on your personal preferences. July and August are the warmest months of the year and are therefore very popular. If you’d like warm temperatures and to make the most of the long summer days, we recommend June. May and September are great times to visit to avoid peak tourist season. If you don’t mind colder weather, October-April can be a lovely time to visit with good value deals.

Where to stay in Wrocław

If you’re looking to be right in the centre of Wrocław, we recommend the Old Town (Stare Miasto). Not only is this a very convenient area to stay with a range of bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, it is also the oldest part of the city with colourful tenement houses and cobblestone streets. There is so much to explore in this area including the Old Market Square (Rynek), the colourful Salt Market (Plac Solny), and the Jewish Quarter which houses one of the largest synagogues in Poland, the White Stork Synagogue.

For a more alternative stay, you can try Nadodrze, a hotspot for arts and culture. Take a wander through this area of Wrocław and see some incredible art, both on street murals and in galleries. It’s a great place to shop, eat and drink with cute independent shops, cool coffee shops and delicious street food.

The eastern districts of Biskupin and Sępolno are great for families or people who want to stay away from the buzz of the city centre. Surrounded by green space and in close proximity to major attractions such as the Japanese Gardens, Centennial Hall and Wrocław Zoo, these areas offer an alternative, more peaceful stay.
