Where is warm in winter for holidays?
White sand beaches, pina coladas by the pool, and beautiful cultural excursions in the sun - all staples of the perfect summer holiday. However, did you know that you also have a whole host of options that offer exactly the same luxuries if you’re seeking a warm weather winter holiday?
From the Canary Islands and Mallorca to Morocco and Turkey, if you are looking for a New Year getaway, there are many glorious destinations you can fly to from Liverpool John Lennon Airport. In this guide, we provide you with our top tips for preparing for a winter holiday, covering everything from booking airport car parking to sorting essential travel documents, before taking an in depth look at a number of ideal winter holiday destinations.
Preparing for a winter holiday
As we found out in our recent blog on preparing for a trip abroad, there is more to getting ready for a holiday than simply turning up to the airport with your plane ticket. To help make sure you’re as prepared as possible once you have chosen a destination and booked your flights, below we’ve provided our essential winter holiday checklist.
- Make sure your passport is in date
While it might sound obvious, nothing will dampen pre-holiday excitement more than the realisation that your passport is out of date. If you're booking a surprise winter holiday for a friend or loved one, make sure you know the passport of everyone involved is in date, with more than six months before it is due to expire.
- Check luggage allowances
Over-packing and being forced to either pay a penalty fee or frantically move items around between suitcases to try and disperse some of the weight while standing at the check-in desk can be both expensive and stressful. All airlines have different baggage policies, so be sure to look these up on their website and weigh your luggage accordingly before heading to the airport. This is particularly important if you are checking in sport equipment for your winter getaway, such as skis, bikes or golf clubs. It’s also a good idea to brush up on what you can and can’t take through airport security.
- Take out travel insurance
Whether you’re going for an adventure-filled excursion or a relaxed beach holiday, travel insurance is always a good idea. Getting covered will protect you against a range of potentially holiday-spoiling events, including lost or stolen luggage, delayed or cancelled flights and any medical charges, including those not covered by your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), should you fall ill or injure yourself abroad. (UK-issued EHICs are valid until they expire. The expiry date can be found on the front of the card, on the bottom right).
- Sort out travel to the airport or airport car parking
With the excitement of booking your dream winter holiday, it can be easy for the more mundane aspects of organising your trip to slip your mind - how you plan to get to the airport and what to do with your car if you choose to drive yourself is certainly one of these things. We recommend making plans early, whether that involves organising an airport taxi service, reserving seats on public transport, organising a lift from friends or family, or booking airport car parking for the duration of your winter holiday.
Where to go on holiday in February and March
Whether you’re looking for the perfect family holiday as schools break up for February half term, or you are simply looking for some March fun in the sun, the start of a new year can be a great time to travel abroad. So, no matter if you want to go on a sunny beach holiday, a cultural city break or an exciting adventure vacation, there are plenty of options when it comes to winter getaways. Below we take an in-depth look at some of the destinations you can choose from.
- Lanzarote
Dubbed the ‘best destination in Europe for winter sun’, the Canary isle of Lanzarote is the perfect location for a winter beach holiday. Offering a unique combination of warm (but bearable) winter temperatures, beautiful sandy beaches, and a striking volcanic landscape, this stunning Spanish island located just off the west coast of Africa ticks all the boxes.
- Barcelona
If you're not one for beach holidays, but are still looking for a warm winter getaway, look no further than a city break to Barcelona. Located on Spain’s Mediterranean coast and with the Serra de Collserola mountain range to the west, this cultural heavyweight has something for everyone. The city is rammed with tourists in summer and experiences heavy rainfall in autumn and spring, however, during winter the streets of the Catalan capital city are much quieter (and drier)! With average temperatures of between 8 and 17 degrees during this period, Barcelona is not boiling, but equally provides the ideal escape from the grey, often frosty winter mornings in the UK.
- Majorca
If an adventure holiday is more your bag, you can’t beat Mallorca in wintertime. As well as offering a range of water sports and rock climbing opportunities, this Balearic island is known as a hidden mecca of cycling. Take on Sa Calobra and Cap du Formentor - one of the most breathtakingly beautiful cycle climbs in the world - while also enjoying warm, but not unbearable, mediterranean weather. This winter holiday really needs to be on the bucket list of any cycling fanatic or adrenaline junkie!
