Passengers can share their footsteps with prehistoric creatures

Today, representatives from Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) attended an extraordinary launch of a fossil finding guide aimed at passengers and visitors at LJLA.

The guide, known as ‘LJLA Fossil Mystery Tour’ has been produced alongside a local geologist from the Liverpool Geological Society to give passengers and visitors the opportunity to explore what creatures once shared their footsteps more than 250 million years ago. The guide highlights the main types of fossil which can be clearly seen in the limestone floor slabs across the terminal building and also offers a Fossil Mystery Tour around the terminal building.

Robin Tudor, General Manager – Corporate and Community Affairs at LJLA, said: “We’re delighted to be launching LJLA’s Fossil Mystery Tour guide. It’s fascinating to learn about the fossils which live in the limestone and to be able to now tell our passengers all about them. Some passengers aren’t aware that the marks and patterns around the terminal are in fact fossils. Before now we’ve received complaints about the marks and coffee stains on the terminal floor that passengers have mistaken these excellent fossil examples for!”
The guide is also ideal for passengers wanting to the pass the time or for those who want to visit LJLA and explore the terminal in more detail.”

Joe Crossley, from the Liverpool Geological Society, added: “It has been quite fantastic and most enjoyable to research the exotic continental fossils at LJLA, because they are such superb fossils, so very well preserved, and beautifully displayed in the polished limestone slabs which not only floor the entire concourse but also adorn the walls. The fossils are particularly interesting because they give such a vivid insight into our world around 250 million years ago.

“With time to spare before their flight we hope that passengers and visitors, of whom I’m sure there will be many once word gets around, will take up the tour and learn about the fossils and what they tell us about the distant past.”
The launch of LJLA Fossil Mystery Tour guide coincides with the bicentenary celebrations of the Geological Society of London. The Society which was set up on 13 November 1807 is planning a range of activities throughout the week to mark the special occasion.

The Fossil Mystery Tour guide is now available from the Information Desk in the terminal building.
