Low-cost carrier Ryanair has announced it is to commence a new scheduled service from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to the Capital of Sweden, Stockholm.

The new route will link Liverpool with Sweden for the very first time and increases Ryanair’s extensive network from Liverpool to 35 destinations. The service will start on 14th October and will operate four times a week to Ryanair’s Skavasta base.

Announcing the new route, Ryanair’s Head of Sales & Marketing Sinead Finn, said:

“We are delighted to announce Stockholm as an additional service to our existing 34 routes from Liverpool JLA. The new route will carry 60,000 passengers in the first years.

Since commencing operations at LJLA in 1988, Ryanair has been committed to bringing low fare routes to the region and today’s announcement strengthens our position as Liverpool’s largest carrier.

Stockholm is a vibrant city positioned in the heart of Scandinavia. Built on 14 different islands it is a great mixture of history, modern design and nature. Thanks to its compact size, you can see and do most things in Stockholm in a short space of time making it a perfect destination for city breaks or longer stays, all the year round.

Neil Pakey, Managing Director at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, commented: “This announcement is very exciting for JLA and the North West region. This new route doesn’t only open up the window of opportunity for our passengers to fly low cost direct to Sweden for the first time it also enables Swedes to reach Merseyside to see what Liverpool has to offer during the Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008.

Stockholm is a trendy modern Capital to visit and boasts a wealth of historic attractions and sights which are scattered across 14 islands. There is something for everyone and to have links with Stockholm for the very first time is great news and we wish the route every success.”

To celebrate this new route, Ryanair has introduced a fare offer from Liverpool to Stockholm for just £17.99 one way tax inclusive* and has slashed fares from Liverpool to destinations including Aberdeen, Shannon, Cork, Milan and Inverness. These are available from just £10 one way tax inclusive*, and Ryanair urges all passengers to log onto Ryanair’s website immediately, as seats this cheap will sell out fast.

Ryanair is to invest $140m and add two more B737 800s (total 6) in Stockholm and add 12 new routes Alicante, Basel, Bratislava, Eindhoven, Baden Baden, Liverpool, Malta, Pisa, Porto, Salzburg, Trapani and Valencia starting in October 2007.
