The August bank holiday is expected to be the busiest weekend of the year for LJLA with more than 70,000 passengers travelling through the airport.

With a mixture of sunshine and showers forecast for the weekend, travellers are trying to escape to sunnier climates, with Portugal, Spain, France and Turkey the most popular European destinations.
For the first time, bank holiday hotspots also include Hong Kong, Dubai and New York.

The rise in popularity of long-haul travel is due to the new KLM route at LJLA, which provides the region’s travellers with access to over 650 worldwide destinations via its hub Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

Despite ongoing industrial action by Servisair personnel, there has been no delay to flights and the Airport expects business as usual for the weekend ahead.

Robin Tudor, Head of PR for Peel Airports, commented: "Whilst the recession and the poor weather are doing their best to dampen spirits, it appears that the chance to jet off somewhere warm or get away for an exciting city break is still important to the region’s passengers.

"Already, we’ve been experiencing busier loads on flight in the run up to the bank holiday weekend and expect this to be our busiest of the year so far"
