The post-Christmas and New Year period is always a bit of a strange time of year – the back-to-reality blues kick in on or around the third day of January for most people! If you are thinking of booking a weekend getaway in January, take a look through Liverpool John Lennon Airport’s destinations page for some inspiration and to get you excited for your next trip. Whether you fancy a culture-infused city break or a bit of winter sun, there are plenty of places for you to choose from. Below are a few of our favourites.

Dublin

The Irish capital has become increasingly popular with tourists over the past decade, with approximately 6 million people visiting Ireland in 2015 alone. From the Irish pubs in Temple Bar to St Patrick’s Cathedral and Trinity College, there is plenty of significant architecture and history to explore all over the city. The hop-on hop-off tour buses are a huge hit with tourists, enabling you to see some of the most iconic places in Dublin and stop to see as much or as little as you would like. January is a fantastic month to go for many reasons, but particularly for Trad Fest between 27th and 31st January where live traditional folk music is played all over Temple Bar. Direct flights to Dublin from Liverpool John Lennon Airport are available with Aer Lingus.

Paris

Visiting the City of Love is the perfect start to any year, with ample history and architecture to take in and explore. Some of the most famous attractions to be seen include the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs-Élysées and of course, the Eiffel Tower. It’s usually between 5 and 10 degrees in January, so if you plan on doing a lot of walking make sure you take your coat. Art lovers will of course be able to visit the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, but be sure to not miss the Warhol exhibition at Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. The art museum is just a short walk from the Champs-Élysées, so make sure you pop in as the exhibition ends at the beginning of February. Direct flights to Paris from Liverpool John Lennon Airport are available with easyJet.

Edinburgh

If you fancy a couple of days away somewhere in the UK, Edinburgh is the perfect destination to visit in January. To take in the spectacular views of the city, take a trip up to Arthur’s Seat to admire the incredible scenery. If you want to fit in as much sightseeing as possible, there are a few places you absolutely cannot miss, including Edinburgh castle, the Scott Monument, the Scottish National Galleries and the Scotch Whiskey Distillery. Also, if you happen to be visiting on or around the 30th January and fashion is your thing, be sure to pop in to Edinburgh’s Affordable Vintage Fair. Direct flights to Dublin from Liverpool John Lennon Airport are available with Flybe.

Palma

The only true city in the Balearic Islands, Palma makes a great destination for a winter break. Situated in the south of the beautiful Mediterranean island of Majorca, Palma offers plenty of tourist attractions which cater to every kind of visitor. Home to over half the population of the island, the city has a bustling and vibrant atmosphere especially in January when the annual San Sebastian festival is marked by live music and dancing. Often drawing comparisons to Barcelona, the city’s heritage is open for discovery through a wide range of cathedrals, castle ruins, museums and galleries. Perfect for any lover of the arts, Palma’s range of concerts, exhibitions, ballets and theatre performances are huge and when you get tired of the culture, its golden beaches are perfect if you want to relax and soak up some winter sun. Direct flights to Palma from Liverpool John Lennon Airport are available with Thompson.
