The first Bank Holiday period of the year this weekend sees the start of a new airline, new routes and the start of the busier summer schedules at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) which coincides with the Easter holiday long weekend getaway.

Whilst there remains heightened security awareness and a greater Police visibility on site at the Airport following the events earlier this week at Brussels Airport, it is otherwise business as usual. Over 60,000 passengers are expected to pass through the Airport over the Easter weekend, as passengers take the opportunity to fly between Liverpool and a host of destinations across Europe, the UK and North America.

The Airport is forecasting a possible 15% increase in passenger throughput over the Easter weekend compared to the same period last year and follows a successful January and February with passenger numbers already up by over 20% so far this year.

The start of the Summer schedules for airlines over the next few days will see a number of new services operate from Liverpool as well as increased frequencies on other more established routes. New routes include Wizz Air’s flights to Budapest and Katowice, the return of Czech Airlines’ flight to Prague and Blue Air’s service to Bacau, and the first flight from Spanish airline Vueling, who commence their new three times weekly service to Barcelona.

Ryanair and easyJet will have increased summer programmes too, with more flights to destinations including Faro, Pisa, Bergerac and Malaga from Liverpool.

The most popular destinations this weekend are likely to be sunshine hot spots, though the early Easter holiday period once again means that many passengers are also likely to take advantage of flights to Winter ski destinations across Europe too.

Passengers departing from the Airport in the coming days are reminded to allow plenty of time both to travel to the Airport due to roadworks across the region and also to pass through the airport terminal, as it is expected to be busy at peak times.

Robin Tudor, Head of PR for Liverpool John Lennon Airport commented, “The Easter Bank Holiday long weekend is traditionally the first busy period of the year and again coincides with the start of the busier Summer schedules. This year we also have a number of new services starting and expect the increases in passenger numbers that we have experienced here consistently over the past 12 months to make this our busiest Easter for some time.”
