Management and staff at Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) are gearing up for what is likely to be the Airport’s busiest day of the year next Wednesday as around 2,700 Liverpool fans fly out to Basel ahead of the Europa League Final – in addition to the normal busy May passenger traffic departing from LJLA that morning.
An additional 14 dedicated football fans flights to Basel are expected to depart from Liverpool on Wednesday, with the first fans flight set to leave at 06:00 and 10 further flights due to depart by 9:25am.
Airport management have been drawing up plans ever since Liverpool’s semi-final success, with additional staff, equipment and volunteers being brought in to accommodate the extra volumes of passengers expected to pass through the Airport in a short space of time.
The Airport will be extremely busy on Wednesday morning. Fans and other passengers travelling from the Airport at this time are strongly advised to allow plenty of time to pass through the Airport and to check with their airlines what time they should arrive to check-in, with airlines opening check-in 2 -3 hours before departure.
The Airport is also keen to remind fans travelling to Basel of the strict security measures that continue to remain in place at all UK airports including restrictions on the amount of liquids that individuals are allowed to take through the security area and where possible minimise belongings that they wish to take with them.
Airport Operations Director Colin Swaine commented, “We are putting lots of plans in place to make sure fans heading over to Basel can take advantage of the convenience of flying from their local airport and we expect there to be a great atmosphere here on Wednesday morning.
The Airport will be very busy however and we ask that fans and the thousands of passengers also departing from Liverpool to destinations elsewhere across Europe and the UK, allow plenty of time to pass through the Airport and for their patience as we look to process them through the terminal as quickly as possible.”
