With the Christmas period not too far away, there’s never been a better time to explore the vast array of Christmas markets across Europe. Here’s a selection of what’s on over the festive period in 2018:

Bergen

The Norwegian city is often connected with nature and traditional architecture. With a temperature of around 2°C during the winter months, it is the perfect location to visit if you want a break with a Christmassy feel. The Bergen Christmas markets offer various handmade, homemade and edible Christmas gifts. Christmas foods from all over the world are also featured for you to try. Indoor and outdoor activities are available including Ferris Wheels, a carousel and the world’s biggest gingerbread town (Pepperkakebyen) which would no doubt leave you in the festive spirit, as the locals of Bergen help produce the lovely creation. The Christmas market is situated at Festplassen, in the middle of the city centre.

Dublin

A huge success year after year, there is no doubt that 2018 will welcome thousands of visitors to Dublin’s Christmas Market. With handcrafted jewellery, stained glass, wooden toys and beautiful pieces of artwork for visitors to purchase, paired with a German themed bar, carousel and carol singing, it’s no surprise that Dublin is a must see Christmas market of 2018.

Alicante

Not typically associated with Christmas markets, Alicante's offering should be viewed on its uniqueness.  A ‘White Christmas’ is marvellously created in a Mediterranean climate thanks to the ice rink in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento square. Additionally the Christmas markets come to the Plaza de Gabriel Miró square in the form of Nazareth Market and the Nativity Play. With arts and crafts stalls, food, entertainment workshops and animals.

Geneva

A place of postcard perfection during the winter months and a hub for keen shoppers and winter sports enthusiasts, Geneva has a lot to offer around the Christmas period. With Christmas markets aplenty you won’t spend long away from the scent of mulled wine and vibrant Christmas lights. One of the most beautiful parks in Geneva, the Bastions Park is transformed into an enchanting market ­filled with lights and festive scenery. With local artisan’s creating beautiful objects and delicious food, this Christmas market is a must see for visitors who hope to experience Swiss Christmas traditions and delicacies.

Salzburg

Austria’s very own winter wonderland has beautiful mountainous views and is a popular skiing destination, with the nearest peak being just 10 miles from the city. If skiing doesn’t get you in the festive spirit then perhaps a trip to the traditional Christmas market located at the Cathedral and Residenz Square, in Salzburg’s historic city centre. Featuring choir singing accompanied with wind instruments and various nativity exhibitions.

Berlin

Berlin’s Christmas markets are sure to not disappoint, with plenty of choice of markets to explore. Visitors will have mulled wine in hand before they can say Glühwein. Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church Christmas market is often considered the best in Berlin and will be hosting its 35th annual Christmas market. The market offers the traditional Thuringian bratwurst, sweet waffles, candied fruit, nuts and many more festive treats to indulge in. Located in the heart of the City West and featuring more than 100 booths this market is not one to be missed.
