Driving in Liverpool: what you need to know
Liverpool is fairly well-served by public transport, but having a hire car will give you more freedom and flexibility to explore the city and surrounding area.
There are a few pointers to be aware of if you’re new to driving in this part of the world. For example, the speed limit on many of Liverpool’s streets is 30mph, but it’s important to look out for areas that have a 20mph limit in operation. These streets tend to be well signposted. If you want to travel across to the other side of the Mersey, there are two road tunnels available. The Queensway Tunnel connects the city to Birkenhead, while the Kingsway Tunnel joins it to Wallasey. These tunnels are in operation 24/7 365 days a year, although they do occasionally close for maintenance. They are both toll roads, so make sure you have your credit or debit card, or enough cash, handy.
You should also be aware of the various bus lanes when driving in Liverpool. These lanes are restricted and if you use them during prohibited times, you will be fined. The restrictions are clearly signposted, so keep an eye out for them.
There are thousands of parking spaces available across the city charging different rates. Options include on-street pay and display spaces and designated car parks. It’s worth researching your options before you make a journey to ensure you find a spot that’s close to the attractions you’re visiting and offers the best value for money for the time period you’re likely to stay.
Driving in the UK
If you haven’t driven in the UK before, make sure you research the rules of the road carefully before you collect your hire car at Liverpool Airport. Here are just a few of the facts that you should be aware of:
- You drive on the left side of the road and overtake on the right.
- It is an offence to use a hand-held mobile phone or another similar device when driving.
- The speed limits are as follows:
Motorways and dual-carriageways - up to 70mph (112km/h) (watch out for variable speed limits, which will be signposted overhead or at the roadside)
Built-up areas - up to 30mph (48km/h), unless otherwise specified
Outside built-up areas - 60mph (96km/h)
